Flames of Fire
In this study, we will look at scripture from three books of the bible. All of these are in reference to the Lord's coming. We begin in Isaiah:
"For behold, the LORD will come in fire And His chariots like a whirlwind, to render His anger with fury, And His rebuke with flames of fire. For the Lord will execute judgment by fire And by His sword on all flesh, And those slain by the LORD will be many."
Isaiah 66:15-16 NASB
At His coming, He will come in fire, And render His anger with fury. He will rebuke with "flames of fire." And by fire and by His sword on all flesh, He will execute judgment and He will slay many. In Revelation, John describes the Lord's coming:
"And I saw heaven opened; and behold, a white horse, and He who sat upon it is called Faithful and True, and in righteousness, He judges and makes war. And his eyes are a flame of fire..."
Revelation 19:11-12a NASB
At His coming, Jesus sits on a white horse and in righteousness he judges and makes war. John describes Jesus with eyes as a "flame of fire." John further describes Christ at His coming:
'And from His mouth comes a sharp sword, so that He may smite the nations; and He will rule them with a rod of iron; and He treads the winepress of the wrath of God Almighty."
Revelation 19:15 NASB
Out of the Lord's mouth comes a sharp sword in order to smite the nations. He will rule the nations with a rod of Iron. And He treads the winepress of God's wrath. Isaiah said the Lord will come to render His anger with fury (or heat.) From these two passages, The Lord is coming to execute His judgment among the nations. They both describe the Lord with the flames of fire. From what is given from the above scriptures, this is at the Lord's coming after the tribulation.
In his second letter to the Thessalonians, Paul commends them for their faith and endurance during their time of affliction. Paul writes:
"...It is only just for God to repay with affliction to those who afflict you, and to give relief to you who are afflicted and to us as well when the Lord Jesus shall be revealed from heaven with His mighty angels in Flaming Fire..."
Second Thessalonians 1:6-7 NASB
In his letter, Paul says God will repay to those who afflicted the church and give relief of their affliction and Paul's when the Lord Jesus is revealed from Heaven with His mighty angels "in flaming fire":
"...Dealing out retribution to those who do not know God and to those who do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus. And these will pay the penalty of eternal destruction, away from the presence of the Lord and from the glory of His power, when He comes to be glorified in His saints on that day, and to be marveled at among all who believed--for our testimony to you was believed."
Second Thessalonians 1:8-10 NASB
At this time the Lord will deal out retribution on those who do not know God and to those who do not obey the gospel. They will pay the penalty of eternal punishment. And they will be forever away from the Lord's presence and His power and glory when Jesus Comes to be glorified in His saints on that day. The passage of scripture in Second Thessalonians parallels with the parts of scripture of Isaiah and Revelation. And all this will happen at the Lord's coming after the tribulation.
"And His head and His hair was white as wool. like snow; and His eyes were like a flame of fire..."
Revelation 1:14 NASB
